Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency an online platform that provides commentary and videos on gender representations in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American media critic and blog writer that has received awards for her work. She is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency an online platform designed to provide education on the role of women in the world of pop culture, is operated by Sarkeesian. Determined to challenge the assumptions of women that have been portrayed in popular culture, she is also working on issues related to the targeted harassment of women and other marginalized classes of people in the online area. Sarkeesian, who holds a Master's in Political and Social thought from York University, is also popular as a public speech-maker. She has presented speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. Attracted to issues related to gender and feminism since her early years, she founded her website Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the university. She was launching a series of videos on the web that looked at gender roles in video games when she became the victim of online bullying. But the assault did not deter her instead it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist critic of media. For the many achievements she's made for women's rights, she's been awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic who has won a variety of awards and created Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organisation that studies how women are represented in pop culture narratives.
